Edwards was born in Santa Barbara, California, the son of Erika Plack (née Weber), an artist/landscape painter, and Peter Edwards, an architect.[2] He has two older brothers, Jeffrey and Peter Ross, and two older sisters, Annamaria and Heidi. Edwards was encouraged by his parents to follow his interest in acting. He studied acting at the University of Southern California but left before graduating when parts were offered to him.
Revenge of the Nerds

Edwards had his first starring role in the 1984 comedy Revenge of the Nerds as Gilbert Lowell.
Lewis Skolnick (Robert Carradine) and Gilbert Lowell (Anthony Edwards) are nerds, and best friends who have just graduated from high school. Gilbert is comfortable with his reputation as a nerd, though Lewis hates being thought of as such. They enroll in fictional Adams College due to its acclaimed computer science department. The college also displays unethical favoritism toward its football team, the Atoms. This gives the coach (John Goodman), who is an arrogant bully, and his team, stocked mainly by the equally obnoxious jocks of the Alpha Beta fraternity, considerable power on campus. The Administrative Dean (David Wohl) is largely intimidated into complicity in this favoritism by the football coach.

Edwards met Ryan during the making of the film Top Gun (1986) and moved in with her. They were a couple until she met actor Dennis Quaid during the film Innerspace (1987), and she moved in with and eventually married him. Both actors portrayed military fighter pilots in their respective roles.

Edwards' best known role to date is as Dr. Mark Greene on the long-running TV series ER, where he resided from its premiere in 1994 to the end of the 8th season in 2002. In a touching and emotional storyline, his main character passes away from brain cancer. He reportedly earned $35,000,000 for three seasons on ER. His ER paycheck made him one of the highest paid television actors of all time. Anthony Edwards and his former co-star George Clooney, were the ones who suggested doing an episode of ER live.[3] The fourth season premiere, "Ambush" was performed live twice with an East Coast and West Coast version.
