Schwimmer was born in Astoria, Queens, New York, to Jewish parents, Arthur Schwimmer and Arlene Colman, and then lived in Valley Stream, Long Island, until he was 2 years old. He was raised in Los Angeles, California, where he attended Beverly Hills High School.

Schwimmer is best known for his role as palaeontologist Dr. Ross Geller in the television sitcom Friends. The program was hugely successful and Schwimmer, along with his co-stars, gained widespread and worldwide recognition among television viewers. He earned an Emmy Award nomination in the “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” category for the role in 1995. This made him the first cast member of Friends to receive such a nomination.
Aside from acting, he also directed ten episodes of the series, once being credited as 'Snaro.'

Robin Monroe (Heche), a New York journalist working for Dazzle, a fashion magazine, is invited by her boyfriend Frank (Schwimmer) to spend a one-week holiday with him on the island paradise of Makatea in the South Pacific. For the final leg of their journey the couple have to make do with a small dilapidated aircraft (DHC-2 Beaver) piloted by a middle-aged American called Quinn Harris (Ford). A few hours after their arrival, Frank proposes to Robin.
Robin, however, is a workaholic and cannot say no when she gets a call from her boss asking her to go to Tahiti just for one night to supervise a fashion event. She hires Quinn to fly her there, but an unexpected thunderstorm forces the plane into a crash-landing on a deserted island (Part of a cross cutting sequence in which the forced landing is juxtaposed with a native dance performed for tourists and watched by Frank back at the hotel).
Band of Brothers

Schwimmer gained most recognition outside of Friends playing Captain Herbert Sobel in the dramatic mini-series Band of Brothers. The miniseries centers on the experiences of E Company ("Easy Company") of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, United States Army 101st Airborne Division and one of its officers, Richard Winters (played by Damian Lewis), from Easy's basic training at Toccoa, Georgia, through the American airborne landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of Bastogne and on to the end of the war.
Turnaround

In January 2003 Schwimmer Premiered his play "Turnaround" at the 99-seat West Hollywood Coast theater. All of his "Friends" were in attendance.
Madagascar

Madagascar is a computer-animated film produced by DreamWorks Animation, and released in movie theaters on May 27, 2005. The film tells the story of four Central Park Zoo animals who have spent their lives in blissful captivity and are unexpectedly shipped back to Africa, getting shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. The voices of Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer are featured.
Schwimmer voiced Melman (age 11) a hypochondriac giraffe, who was transferred to the Central Park Zoo as a young adult. Because of his previous stay in the Bronx Zoo, Melman believes that he's a real worldly guy, the most experienced in his circle of friends. He's also on a lot of medication.
Wins Defamation Lawsuit

David Schwimmer's publicist says the former "Friends" star has won a $400,000 dollar judgment in a
defamation lawsuit against former charity fund-raiser Aaron Tonken.
Schwimmer filed the lawsuit last year after Tonken said the actor demanded two Rolex watches to attend his own charity event.
Tonken is serving a prison sentence of more than five years for unrelated charges of defrauding charities of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Schwimmer's publicist says Tonken has retracted the statements and apologized to the actor.
Schwimmer said in a statement that he feels "vindicated by the judgment" and is pleased that Tonken apologized.

The film is set in a small Oregon town, where a brutal serial killer nicknamed the 'Oregon undertaker' has been murdering and mutilating young women.

Nothing But The Truth

Nothing But The Truth is an upcoming (expected 2008) thriller written and directed by Rod Lurie. The story centers on female newspaper reporter (Kate Beckinsale) who outs a CIA agent and is imprisoned for refusing to reveal her source. David Schwimmer plays Beckinsale's husband, who initially supports his wife's decision not to name names but as time goes by begins to resent her for choosing a principle over her family. Angela Bassett plays the supportive editor in chief at her Washington paper where Beckinsale’s character works, and Noah Wyle plays the lawyer placed in charge of defending her. The cast includes Matt Dillon as the prosecutor, Vera Farmiga as the CIA agent, and Alan Alda plays an attorney who tries to free the reporter from jail.
