The hotline is staffed by Philip (Steve Martin), the crabby Mrs. Munchnik (Madeline Kahn), and the mousy and passive Catherine (Rita Wilson). Supposedly the expectations "of everyone thinking of jumping off a bridge or slitting their wrists on Christmas Eve" has only resulted in a few women frightened against a serial killer called the Seaside Strangler, several obscene phone calls, and one unfortunate misunderstanding involving a man, a gun, and a static-filled phone connection.

Jackie states that everyone who goes into the lake, comes out different. As the movie progresses, Jackie first-handedly witnesses what is happening to everyone around her as she is kidnapped by aliens from a parallel universe. The aliens take the bound and gagged victims to the middle of a lake and throw them overboard. Once their victim is killed, the aliens transform their appearance into that of their victim and take on their victim's life. Fortunately for Jackie, she escapes from the aliens with the aid of a fishing lure, to which she uses to cut her bonds.

With no recourse but to return to his uncles' farm, Walter eventually becomes used to their quirky, socially atypical mannerisms and they become used to him and his shyness.
