Silver Spoons

September 25, 1982 - December 17, 1983

He earned the status of teen idol in the mid-1980s in shows such as Silver Spoons.

The title of the show is based on the expression that rich children are born with a proverbial silver spoon in their mouth, implying that they are given only the very best and work for nothing. It is also a term for family wealth. Despite the premise, the goal of the show was to disprove either of these notions.

It's Your Move

September 26, 1984 - Feburary 16, 1985

The show centered on Matthew Burton (Bateman), a teenage scam artist who lived in a Van Nuys, California apartment with his older sister Julie (Cast) and widowed mother Eileen (Kaye). Matt ran various underhanded dealings with his high school friends, especially his sidekick Eli (Adam Sadowsky), such as term paper sales, exam answer keys, and blackmail.

Valerie

March 1, 1986 - July 20, 1991

For its first two seasons, the show was known as Valerie, and its stories revolved around the show's star, Valerie Harper. She played Valerie, the matriarch of the Hogan family, who struggled with everyday family problems while her husband, Michael (Josh Taylor), was a pilot who was seldom around due to his demanding schedule (at least in the early seasons). Other stars included Jason Bateman as her eldest, girl-crazy son David, and Danny Ponce and Jeremy Licht as her fraternal twin sons Willie and Mark (Mark was the brainy one, Willie the irresponsible one). During the 1987 summer taping hiatus, Harper had a falling out with the show's producers, after which she was dismissed and her character was written out of the show as being killed in a car accident. NBC explained that the series would take on difficult issues facing the family during the grieving process.

Peter LaFleur (Vaughn), the owner of the smaller gym, has defaulted on his mortgage and enters a dodgeball tournament in an attempt to earn the money necessary to prevent his gym from being purchased by Globo-Gym. Globo-Gym enters a team in the tournament in an effort to ensure that Average Joe's gym fails.

The Break-Up

June 2, 2006

A bickering couple, Gary (Vaughn) and Brooke (Aniston), live in a condo in Chicago. Both are driven in their careers, with Gary running a thriving city tour business with his brothers and Brooke working in an art gallery. Early in the movie, they separate after a bitter argument. Their conflicts are largely due to Gary's immaturity and Brooke's overreactions.

Their social backgrounds contribute to the division that becomes apparent between them. Brooke has applied feng shui books from her mother in the interior design of her and Gary's condo; her brother Richard is part of an a cappella group called The Tone Rangers; her friend Addie uses phrases of advice such as "Remember, we're always owning our actions, right? And we're always healthy with it, yes?"; and Brooke bemoans how many times she has dropped "hints about the ballet" to Gary, but to no avail. By contrast, Gary likes action-oriented video games, is an avid Chicago sports fan, and wants a pool table in the condo. Brooke is fighting for their relationship to stay alive. However, the condo ends up becoming the subject of a war in which both try to outwit and outdo each other through blind dates, drunken parties, and broken promises.

November 16, 2007

At the start of the movie and at intervals thereafter, the 9-year-old boy Eric (Zach Mills) is shown telling the story through a book whose pages appear on screen.

Eccentric, 243-year-old Mr. Edward Magorium (Dustin Hoffman) owns and manages a magical toyshop. The shop has many quirks, including animated toys, a ledger that can bring to the purchase counter any toy on command, and a doorknob that, when rotated, changes the interior of a magic room. Magorium's assistant is the young woman Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman), who is an aspiring pianist, has plans to quit the store and start a career in music composition, and is, unexplainedly, always addressed by her surname. Mahoney is Eric's only human friend, as shown by their first on-screen conversation, and is cherished in a paternal fashion by Mr. Magorium himself. Unexpectedly, Mr. Magorium announces that although he is not ill, he intends to "leave" — that is, to die — and gives the shop to Mahoney in his will. As a preparation for his "departure," Magorium hires accountant Henry Weston (Jason Bateman), giving him an interview wherein the latter demonstrates knowledge of Fibonacci numbers.
