Mauldin High School

September 1, 1991 - June 1, 1994

In his first three high school years, Garnett played for Mauldin High School. However, during the summer prior to his senior year of high school, Kevin was in the general vicinity of a fight between black and white students. Although not directly involved, Garnett was arrested. Due to the racially charged incident and fearful of being a target, Garnett decided to leave Mauldin.

Farragut Career Academy

September 1, 1994 - June 1, 1995

He transferred to Farragut Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois for his senior year of high school. He led Farragut to a 28–2 record and was named National High School Player of the Year by USA Today.

Outstanding Player at the McDonald's All-American Game

Garnett and Marbury Falling Out

Garnett and point guard Stephon Marbury had a falling out in friendship as Marbury began to feud with the Timberwolve's main leader, as well as management and coaching staff. Marbury demanded a trade from the team and was later sent to the New Jersey Nets. Some have speculated Marbury did not want to be the "second man" behind Garnett.

Garnett averaged 24.2 points, 13.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.5 steals per game for the season, earning his first Most Valuable Player award. He had lead the Timberwolves to the #1 seed in the Western Conference along with fellow teammates Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell.

After refusing to trade Garnett in previous years, Timberwolves' management finally decided to open up its star player for offers. Garnett's name was mentioned in various trade rumors involving the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, and Dallas Mavericks.

Blockbuster Trade to the Boston Celtics

Garnett agreed to a trade with the Boston Celtics in exchange for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, cash considerations, Boston's 2009 first-round draft pick (top 3 protected) and the 2009 first-round pick Minnesota had traded to Boston in the Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak trade of 2006. The 7-for-1 deal constitutes the largest number of players traded for a single player in league history.
Prior to the trade, Garnett has been criticized several times for being "too loyal" with the Minnesota Timberwolves, despite team management failing to give Garnett quality supporting players.
