Born in London, England

December 21, 1966

Sutherland was born in , London, England, the son of Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, both of whom are successful Canadian actors. He has Scottish ancestry from both parents and is the grandson of Canadian politician Tommy Douglas. Sutherland and his twin sister, Rachel, were born in London (in Saint Mary's Hospital, Paddington) while his parents were working there. As a result, through the jus soli and the jus sanguinis, he holds both a Canadian passport and a British passport with certificate of Right to Abode.
His family moved to Corona, California, shortly afterwards, but his parents eventually divorced in 1972. In 1975, Sutherland moved with his mother to Toronto, Canada where he attended elementary school at Crescent Town School in East York, Toronto and high school at St. Andrew's College, Martingrove Collegiate Institute, Harbord Collegiate Institute and Malvern Collegiate Institute. He also spent a semester at Regina Mundi College in London, Ontario, Canada and attended Crescent Town Elementary School and St. Clair Junior High School in East York, Ontario.

Julia Roberts met Sutherland in 1990, when he was her co-star in Flatliners; he left his wife and children to move in with Roberts. In August 1990, Roberts and Sutherland announced their engagement, with an elaborate studio-planned wedding scheduled for June 14, 1991. Roberts broke the engagement three days before the wedding when she discovered Sutherland had been meeting with a stripper named Amanda Rice.

The Vanishing

Jeff Harriman's (Kiefer Sutherland) girlfriend Diane Shaver (Sandra Bullock) vanishes at a gas station, with no trace of her left behind. Three years later, and with a new (frustrated) girlfriend, Rita Baker (Nancy Travis), in tow, Jeff is still obsessed with finding out what happened. Barney Cousins (Jeff Bridges) arrives and admits that he was responsible for the disappearance. Cousins promises to show Jeff what happened to Diane, but only if he agrees to go through the exact same thing she did.

A Time To Kill

Set in Canton, Mississippi, the film revolves around the rape of a young girl and the subsequent arrest and assassination of the rapists by the girl's father, Carl Lee Hailey. The remainder of the film then focuses on the trial of Carl Lee Hailey for murder. Sutherland played the role of a brother of one of the dead rapists, Freddie Lee Cobb.

Sutherland is most widely associated with the role of Jack Bauer, on the critically acclaimed television series 24. 24 is presented in real time, with each season depicting a 24-hour period in the life of Jack Bauer, who works with the U.S. government as it fights threats on U.S. soil. Bauer is often in the field for the fictional Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) as they try to safeguard the nation from terrorist threats. The show also follows the actions of other CTU agents, government officials and terrorists associated with the plot. The first six seasons of the show were all based in Los Angeles and nearby locations - both real and fictional - in California, although occasionally other locations have been featured as well - most notably, Washington, D.C., where a significant portion of the action took place during the fourth and sixth seasons. Promotional materials for the seventh season have already established that, departing from tradition, it will be set primarily in Washington, D.C

The Sentinel

Pete Garrison (Michael Douglas) is a Secret Service agent and one of the personal bodyguards for the First Lady of the United States Sarah Ballentine (Kim Basinger), with whom he is having an affair. He is one of the oldest and most experienced agents, having been involved in saving Ronald Reagan's life during the Reagan assassination attempt. A fellow agent and close friend, Charlie Merriweather (played by Clark Johnson), is later assassinated in front of his home. He gets wind from a trusted informant that the killing of Merriweather is related to an assassination plot against the President. The information provided by the informant revealed that a mole with access to the President's security detail had provided information to the assassins. The Secret Service Protective Intelligence Division, led by Garrison's former protégé and ex-friend David Breckinridge (Kiefer Sutherland) with rookie partner Jill Marin (Eva Longoria), is tasked with investigating the plot, which begins with polygraphs for every agent.

Arrested

September 25, 2007

Sutherland was arrested early September 25, 2007 on misdemeanor drunk driving charges (his second time since another incident in 2004) after failing a field sobriety test. He was pulled over at around 1:10 a.m. in West Los Angeles, where he tested over the state's legal blood alcohol limit and later released on $25,000 bail.

Jail

December 6, 2007 - January 21, 2008

On October 9, 2007 Kiefer pled no contest to the DUI charge and agreed to complete the 48 day jail sentence in a prison in December 2007, including Christmas and his 41st birthday. He had opted to spend 18 days in jail during 24's winter break in late December and early January and return to jail after production wraps up. However, production had been suspended due to the Hollywood writers' strike so he instead was in jail for 48 days consecutively. Sutherland began his jail term sentence as of December 6, 2007 and was released from the Glendale, California prison just after Midnight on January 21, 2008. He was quoted in People Magazine that he was in jail for New Year's, his birthday, and Christmas and only had one visitor.
